Brasília was inaugurated as Brazil’s new purpose built capital city in 1960. It was designed and developed to be an effective and efficient modern metropolis. The chief architects behind the unique design of the city were Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer, two vastly respected and influential designers in Brazil. It is not unusual for cities in Brazil to honour these great men by naming major thoroughfares in their cities after one of these two great architects. Brasilia has been planned in the shape of an airplane, or crucifix depending on who you ask. In the “cockpit” or near the head of the crucifix you can find Praça dos Três Poderes (Three Powers), named so because this is the point where the three branches of government converge. The city is easily distinguishable by its numerous white buildings, and somewhat unique architecture.
Just under three hours outside of the city in the nearby state of Goias, you can find some extremely spectacular natural attractions including Chapada dos Veadeiros, a gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage site with dozens of awe inspiring waterfalls and beautiful nature trails.
